Peat Depth Surveys in Argyll & Bute and Highland

Regulatory Requirements for Peat

The potential impact of a development proposal on the presence of peat has increasingly become a topic of concern given the release of carbon to the atmosphere as peatlands store significant quantities of this element. Indeed, peatlands are the largest terrestrial carbon store in the UK.

A peat depth assessment can be requested for a development proposal, particularly when it lies within Classes 1 to 5 of the indicative Carbon and Peatland Map 2016.

Survey Details

TransTech solely conducts peat depth surveys in Argyll & Bute and Highland given that the surveys can be somewhat time consuming to perform.

Peat depth measurement intervals are site specific and consultation will be required with the organisation (e.g. NatureScot) making the request.

For the survey, the locations to be probed are defined in Geographic Information System (GIS) software and transferred to a handheld GPS. Depth is then measured at each location using a peat probe with sufficient length of rods to measure its full depth.

Comprehensive Reporting

A report is then produced with our findings which includes the required peat depth mapping of the site in question. Within the report a full description of the peat encountered is made as per NatureScot’s Peatland Assessment Guidelines.
